“Lou Dobbs Has Left The Building”

Lou DobbsFinally, one of the loud, negative and perhaps the most conservative, voices of cable news have been silenced.  Since mid-October CNN anchor, Lou Dobbs has been under enormous pressure to leave the cable network.  Dobbs is known for spreading myths and lies about immigrants and he is responsible for fueling the birther’s absurd claim that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen even after their claim was proven false.

CNN gave Mr. Dobbs a platform to spew his negative rhetoric and voice his narrow-minded opinions that had absolutely nothing to do with facts. He regularly drew upon negative stereotypes of the Hispanic community to make his point about immigration issues and feed the fears of his loyal followers.

After months of continuous rants about immigrants, destroying America or that they carry leprosy the people stood up and said “enough Dobbs”. An online petition was started and 65,000 signatures were collected calling for CNN to fire the man responsible for spreading those outrages lies about Latinos, and Mexicans.  Dobbs a 64-year-old libertarian pundit called the campaigns against him “political intimidation”.  Well, apparently, the pressure worked because Mr. Dobbs has left the building — He resigned on 11/11/09.

“Terrorist Trials Set For New York”

Eric HolderToday Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced the Governments plans to prosecute Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks that resulted in the death of 3000 innocent Americans. This may be the highest-profile terrorism trial in history and the security concerns continue to mount, as many people believe that it will put Americans at risk of another attack.

Attorney General Holder stated that he would instruct prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Mohammed and four other co-conspirators of 9/11 who will also be tried with him. The decision to transfer the detainees to the United States for prosecution in our civilian legal system is causing anger and outrage from some and agreement from others. The Obama Administration made it clear that they would close Guantánamo Bay and bring justice to the individuals responsible for the terrorist attacks. This is the beginning of an extremely difficult process and only time will tell if this is the best solution to an almost impossible problem to solve.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered”. No trial date has been set yet but you can be sure that this trial will be another case of history in the making.

“A Day of Grieving In America”

Obama - Fort Hood eugolyThirteen innocent lives were lost on November 8, 2009 when a fellow Army officer opened fire at Fort Hood Army base. The gunman Major Nidal Malik Hasan also injured 31 others before being shot four times by police officer Kim Munley who was also shot by the gunman. Major Hasan is an Army psychiatrist and remains hospitalized following the horrific incident. No motive has been given for the rampage that took the lives of so many soldiers on American soil. One day before Veterans Day a memorial service honoring the fallen was attended by President Obama who gave a moving eulogy for each individual solider and a promise that justice will be served.

Each personal eulogy given by Obama was heart felt and extremely moving. Perhaps the most powerful remarks came when he told the crowd of mourners “It may be hard to comprehend the twisted logic that led to this tragedy, but this much we do know; no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts. No just and loving God looks upon them with favor. And for what he has done, we know that the killer will be met with justice, in this world, and the next.” Of, course loving and God-fearing people can never understand the horrors visited upon these soldiers and their families but we can most certainly pray for all who have suffered at the hands of another lunatic.

“The Road To Healthcare Reform”

Republican SenatePresident Obama makes history again. He is the first President to come close to realizing the long sought after dream of universal healthcare, since Harry Truman was in office. Many Democrats stood proud when the House passed Healthcare Reform. Although, it was a milestone in this ongoing battle we have not passed the goal line yet. The House bill includes the Bart Stupak amendment that restricts abortion rights coverage to any woman who participates in the public option. Yes, that is exactly what I said; women could be banned from having an abortion. This will surely be up for much debate in the Senate bill and in the general public as American women learn the facts.

The next step is to get support from the Senate —Well, as we all know by now this is where the real work starts. The Senate is known to be more conservative than the House and the GOP continues throwing temper tantrums similar to those of an average two year old. They continue to ignore what the American people want and need. If it benefits the people, they simply say “No” however, if it puts more money in the pocket of insurance companies they say “yes”.

“Pelosi In The House”

President Obama- House Speaker PelosiCheers could be heard ringing out from the Democratic side of the House tonight when House Speaker Pelosi declared, “the bill is passed.” They voted 220 to 215 for the healthcare reform bill. With only 39 Democrats voting no, another chapter for the history books was written.

In 2008, Americans asked for change and this may well be the first time since Obama took the oath of office that they are witnessing real positive change in this country. As the Democrats put it, we have not seen anything like this since Harry Truman was in office 60 years ago.

It is estimated that approximately 96% of Americans will be covered which equates to nearly 36 million who are currently uninsured. The bill expands coverage to more Americans who need it and cuts Medicare spending by a projected $400 billion over the next decade. Individuals earning over $500,000 and families with incomes of $1 million will be required to pay a 5.4% tax surcharge to help cover costs.

Hooray! The House Passed Unemployment Extension

U.S. CongressSwift action is what we witnessed today when the House of Representatives passed the H.R. 3548 bill by a vote of 403-12 to extend unemployment benefits for millions of Americans. From the Congress the legislation now goes directly to the President for his signature. It has been reported that President Obama supports the extension bill and is expected to act immediately to help the unemployed and to put an end to what has become an unnecessarily long and grueling process.

“Unemployment Extension Bill Passes – Help Is On The Way”

fireworksToday the Senate voted overwhelmingly 98-0 to pass the unemployment extension bill. After more than 3-weeks of stalling, the Senate has finally responded to the needs of the people.

The livelihood of millions of Americans depended on the swift passage of this bill and today their prayers have been answered. Unemployment Extension – What Happens Now!

Senator Durbin/Senator Reid

It has taken the Senate weeks to handle one of the most important issues in this country.  What is most surprising is the fact that this is a no-brainer.  Our Governments job is to serve the needs of its citizens; so what part of that don’t they understand.
